Beginners Questions • [Hardware] Auto-Hibernation on System without Desktop Environment

I've installed Debian 12.5 on a ThinkPad T430 and I have it configured without a DE --- just X, xdm, and cwm. Most power-saving features I don't need; the laptop usually sits on a desk and is plugged directly into the WiFi router and into AC, so I'm using its battery pretty much as a UPS. In case the power goes out or on the off chance I'm using the laptop elsewhere in the house and I walk off and forget it's unplugged, I need it to hibernate automatically when the battery level gets to a certain percentage (for example, 25). I installed laptop-mode-tools and set the auto-hibernate battery threshold at 95% so I could unplug it and wait just a little while to see whether it works, but it went into hibernation immediately (the battery was at 100%). Is there something simple I overlooked, maybe? I already tried TLP but I didn't find anything in its config or docs about auto-hibernate. Thanks for any help with this.
