General Questions • "I" EXT4 extended attribute for directory

Hello!

I noticed yesterday that some directories have the extended attribute "I".
For example it's the case for ~/downloads, /tmp and /etc, each are located on EXT4 partition.

The documentation found on EXT4 wiki explain the meaning of this attribute : these directories use hash table to index there entries.
So one can think that this technique is used when directories are huge. But in my case, the ~/download directory is always small, with ~10 files in it. The EXT4 wiki doesn't say a word about this.

I'd like to know when the EXT4 driver decide to use a hash table for directories. Does anyone know ?
