I installed these parallel optimized compression equivalents and took things a step further by renaming, for instance, xz to xz.orig & symlinking xz to pixz instead (in /usr/bin). It worked for me during a 'tar -cOJv' style archival as I watched the system monitor app using all of the cpus, but during a kernel compile using make bindeb-pkg, this approach failed. Changing back to xz instead of the symlink fixed it and the bindeb-pkg build continued to completion.

It seems like this should already be a thing but I seem to recall during that archival I used to test if it would work that only one thread was being used until I symlinked so I'm kind of wondering why xz doesn't already take advantage of parallism, and why pixz apparently isn't a drop in replacement since it broke the kernel build.
