Hardware • Very poor 3D performance using amdgpu driver on Radeon R4 (AMD Stoney APU)

I've got an HP Chromebook which now has vanilla coreboot on it, and can boot any EFI operating system. I loaded it up with Devuan, I think starting with the oldstable (basically bullseye) and at some point I installed the firmware-amd-graphics package.

All of the sudden, my glmark2 score went from 80 - 100 points, to >800 points.

Now, I can't figure out what combination of kernel & firmware packages I had to achieve working 3D acceleration to save my life. After I got the Glmark score in the 850s range, I was able to do full screen full resolution open arena silky smooth. With no firmware, it is an absolute slide show, even in a tiny window. Probably less than 10 fps. With the firmware installed, it is very slow, but not a literal slideshow. Full screen 1280x720 is probably 20 - 25 fps, whereas before it was literally full speed silky smooth. It would go full speed, busy scenes without a single hiccup. Buttery smooth, probably a solid 60+ fps though I never checked.

I don't know when this stopped working, because I don't use this little chromebook for games == I mostly use it for SSH and light surfing. But now it is dog slow in firefox.

I've tried multiple re-installs of Devuan and Debian. Both on Stable, and old-stable. Even tried "testing" on both. No luck!!

Also tried fedora, ubuntu mate, I can't get proper HW 3D working. The driver does load, but the performance is crap.

What might I be doing wrong? It bugs me so much because I had it randomly working by pure luck, and no matter how much I try I can't seem to get the good results again.

Hardware specs:
AMD A4-9120C Dual Core 1600 MHz /w AMD Radeon R4 3 core @ 600 MHz -- AMD Stony Ridge APU
4 GB RAM
It is an HP 11A G6 EE Chromebook, codename grunt / barla

I'm not sure, but I *think* I had the good results while using something newer than 6.1 but older than 6.6. Perhaps 6.2.x?
