Installation • Calamares installer fails with directory not found error; cannot create /var/lib/urandom/random-seed

Hello all, very frustrated with this unusual problem.

I've a fresh Debian 12 live USB which fails to install on my Desktop PC. Both the Debian installer and Calamares fail, with the latter complaining of a directory not found error, with the detail "could not create new random file /var/lib/urandom/random-seed".

I've literally used this same USB to install this same Debian image on this same machine multiple times in the past. I've just now used it to install via Calamares on an old Lenovo T500 laptop (legacy BIOS based) and it works just fine. However on this more recent UEFI based desktop PC, installing to an M.2 NVME drive using a GPT partition table, I get the above error message. Very annoying and weird to boot (no pun intended).

I'm just baffled and would appreciate any input! screenshot of the Calamares error message below.
