Hello,
I experienced the following malfunction running Debian Stable 12.6 (kernel version 6.1.0-23) with Mate Desktop in a laptop equipped with a Realtek ALC256 (Intel Corporation Alder Lake PCH-P High Definition Audio Controller [8086:51c8]) and using internal speakers.
After configuring the installation, the audio was not working (silent): the "Dummy output" audio device was shown by audio controls (e.g. pavucontrol or mate-volume-control applet).
The output of lspci about audio hardware was:First, I installed Sound Open Firmware (sof) firmware files because they were missing:Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to solve the problem.
This was the relevant system log at the time:
These were journal logs from the pulseaudio server when "dummy output" (no audio) was active:I then followed the advice from an earlier forum discussion in [1] and ran the following commands (using my user account, not root):After these two commands, the sound card was recognized by the desktop environment as:This is journal log about pulseaudio server:The general audio software configuration (according to the So it looked as if starting the pulseaudio server would allow the audio device to be recognised and used.
It looked like it was solved ... but it was not: audio did not work again after a reboot, even if it was available manually starting the pulseaudio server.
Then I came across this bug report in the Debian Bug Tracking System (DBTS):So, the wireplumber package [3] is required as session manager for pipewire, and it wasn't installed in my case.
After installing it, the audio worked fine also after rebooting the system.
The pulseaudio sound server is not required with the pipewire sound server, as the pulseaudio API is provided by pipewire via its pipewire-pulse module [4] .
In the end, installed packages were:Hope it helps other users and forums readers with the same issue.

In the end, installed packages were:
