I discovered that programs can be started by simply downloading an archive, extracting it wherever you want and clicking on the executable. They integrate with the desktop and update automatically.
Then you can start the programs after installing them using APT with consequent distribution of the files around the file system.
Why does APT install programs instead of just downloading them?
