Hi all,
I've been using the same VPS provider since 2013, though in the past couple of years (I assume a consequence of Brexit) my direct debit for payment has stopped working. The VPS provider told me a year ago that they are working on it (the VPS provider is in Germany, I'm in the UK), but to date, nada. So I rely on the invoices and make payment manually. Last month, I didn't get the invoice, and forgot the payment. Yesterday, they blocked access. I've made payment, and access has been restored today, but it's shown me how vulnerable I am with this system.
So I'm looking at moving provider, and want to take my fully configured server with me. What is the best tool to backup locally to restore to a new server. rsync, or scp? i.e. do both restore the permissions etc so I can drop them in (or at least, setup a new server, install the required software, and simply copy across /etc and other config folder (maybe /var - is that necessary)?
The VPS hosts a couple of servers, including email and a game server, so I don't want to faff about starting from scratch again.
No rush - I'll keep the old VPS going for another month.
