Hi all!
I am trying to install Debian 12 on a dell inspiron mini 10. I went with the 32-bits network install because the 64-bit installs did not work on it. The included non-free firmware was not sufficient. I decided to go with a network install without a network, resulting in only the core-utils being present. I know enough about Debian to work a bit with CLI, so I figured I could build the rest manually. After some looking I finally found a firmware installer that worked. The OS can now work with the WiFi and ethernet controller. The problem is that it is not getting any DHCP offers after broadcasting its DHCPDISCOVER requests on 255.255.255.255 port 67. Thus far it has me stumped. The machine I'm writing this on is running Linux Mint 22 so it can't be the router hating linux, if that is ever a thing.
I figured iptables might help, as the DHCPOFFER requests might be blocked by the machine. But I can't find any traces of packets being dropped by my router (its logging feature isnt exactly extensive, nor can I find any reason for its configuration to block access) or the laptop itself. This might be a skill issue despite my best efforts. It used to have a working Linux Mint 19 installtion. Everything worked on it.
I can add extra packages via USB stick if need be.
Ethernet also does not lead to a succesful network connection.
Some specs:
Intel Atom 1.6GHz single core, 32-bit
Network controller: broadcom inc BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY (rev 01)
Ethernet controller: Realtek RTL810xE (rev 02)
Anything would be appreciated. Thanks in advance
(EDIT) I have received a private message with a few suggestions. I cannot respond to this as my account has not been granted that capability. I have installed the required firmware properly, I think, with the b43-fw-installer. I also looked at other posts on the forum. The issues and solutions were just different enough to not be applicable to my particular problem unfortunately.
