Hardware • Cant recover from lock screen on Dell Latitude E5590

I have a Dell Latitude E5590 that can't recover from the lock screen.

So far I tried (all GNOME):
  • Ubuntu 20.04
  • Ubuntu 22.04 live system
  • Ubuntu 22.04
  • Debian 12.0.7 live system
The screen stays black and the device doesn't react to any keypress or touchpad input. The device power indicator light is still on, but since the device doesn't react to anything I can only force a shutdown by long-pressing the power button.

It doesn't matter if the lock screen was initiated by selecting the option in the menu or when the automatic screen lock gets engaged after the time limit is reached. I couldn't find any configuration in the power settings that would avoid this problem ... other than just never allowing the system to lock the screen which isn't a viable option – mostly for security reasons.

I tried several different power saving options in the UEFI menus, but to no avail.

I guess it is a hardware problem. Did anyone of you already encounter such an issue and has found any solution? It seems other reports on the net who stumble upon something similar can overcome this because the problem doesn't sit as deep. I vaguely remember that once when I first installed Ubuntu 22.04 I was able to normally come back from the lock screen by just pressing a button and typing in my pass phrase, but this was only once the case and to my knowledge nothing was differently set-up then. I fear this suggests it is either nbot a hardware problem or one that does just occur most of the time, but not always.

Can you think of any command that I should run to investigate further what causes this problem?

So far I didn't try the Debian XFCE live system for example. ... I will do that and report back.
