System and Network configuration • lan interface RX errors

Howdy

I'm having a problem getting reliable connection with my eth0 LAN interface (connected to a switch).
When performing pings to the switch, there's about 50% packet loss, and ifconfig shows a large number of RX errors (frame errors)
But for some reason, I can often "fix it" just by issuing sudo ethtool -r eth0
Once it starts working, it will continuously give 0% packet loss, no RX errors at all (ie have tested for at least an hour of continuous pinging)
However if it's working reliably and I issue sudo ethtool -r eth0 again, it will often go back to the RX errors again.
It never swaps spontaneously between "reliable" and "RX errors", it only happens when I perform sudo ethtool -r eth0, or when I unplug the ethernet cable and then plug it in again

It doesn't seem to make any difference whether I turn autoneg on or off. (sudo ethtool -s eth0 autoneg off). The duplex and speed shown by the interface are always correct

Any clues on what's happening, or how I could troubleshoot it further?

Cheers
Richard
Some extra details
