Beginners Questions • [O/S] Running apps in a separate user account compared to a Virtual Machine?

I am sure this is probably a stupid question but I am still new to Linux. I have some software I want to run on my system that I don't necessarily trust - mainly emulators. For this reason I don't really want to run them on my account. My initial idea was to run them in a Virtual Machine but this also feels a bit excessive (or perhaps it isn't). I then thought, could I run them on a separate user account and change the permissions on my main home folder to no access to "others". Would that be sufficient to protect my data against any potential malware that could be on the other account from software from untrusted sources? Or is the safest way to run it in a VM?
