Graphical Environments & Desktops • Cairo-clock and now??

The good old 'cairo-clock' accompanied me for a quite long time.

Here a pic dated 2/2008 on Kubuntu. (VNC - WIN XP company notebook on my Linux desktop)

The top right corner of the 1st workspace was and is reserved for that analog clock. Under PCLos, LM and since Wheezy Debian.

But with oncoming Tixie those GTK2 libraries will be gone.

OK, can load those from the archive and install 'cairo-clock_0.3.4-2+b2_amd64.deb', but that thing is 18! years old. This way works under testing, but is that wise?

Tried to build from the sources https://github.com/MacSlow/cairo-clock , no luck. It is ice age!

However there are possibilities besides using that old stuff.

One is 'cairo-dock', which works in producing a 'cairo-clock' on the top right corner. But why using Xfce to have a resource-efficient installation and then have to pack a thing like that on the machine?

Next comes 'conky'. Found a very nice approach here https://github.com/hseliger/conky-theme ... ree/master

Uses 'conky' and the original 'cairo-clock' graphics.

BUT, the 'conky' packages in the Debian sources 'conky-std' and 'conky-all' don't come with the necessary options. The documentation that comes with 'conky' is a bit tricky at least and things seem to change fast. With some help from the developers was able to build 'conky' with the options, but then there are those changes concerning the 'lua' part and then I had to quit. Just out of my scope.

But under 'conky' there are other nice clocks. An example here https://forums.bunsenlabs.org/viewtopic.php?id=6939

The first example there can easily be modified. Here my experiment compared to the 'cairo-clock'.

At the moment I think, I'll play a bit that 'conky' clock and try that one one Trixie, it is a pity, but the 'cairo-clock' has to go.
