General Questions • Boot Process Resolution

The installation routine for Debian 12 with Xfce went along pretty well. However, it left the computer with problems of screen resolution during the boot process.

The monitor I am using will attempt to assign a high resolution that will make the display details much too small to read. It is imperative that the system set the res to the one preferred by the user. Nowhere during the install was this option available.

This situation means that the user must configure all of this after the fact.

From what I can gather, the framebuffer method has been surpassed by the KMS method. The question then becomes how and where to make these settings adjustments.

By installing GRUB Customizer, I was able to turn off everything having to do with vga= or video= as is recommended. Currently I have Custom Resolution set to 640x480. This is a nice big menu display that anyone can see, and it boots up very well.

The next conundrum is that period of time right after the GRUB menu, where it comes up to prompt for the LUKS password. This is still way too small. After that is the scrolling display of the kernel boot processes which are also too small. And finally, the Xfce login display resolution is also too small.

I do not get my preferred resolution until after login, and that is just unacceptable. We need to be able tor read boot messages, as well as to easily type into the fields any requested information.

Does anyone know the proper way to set the display resolutions in these periods of the boot up process?

Thank you.
